match report
Bristol Ladies 2nds travelled to Supermarine boosted by their first win at that ground for a number of years at the end of last season. They handed debuts to half of their starting line up. As the game started 2 of those new players from Spain, Elena Redondo and Isabel Rico tested the Supermarine defence and carried the ball well over the gain line. Bristol's forwards took on the challenge put down by the Supermarine pack and started to make in roads.
After 5 minutes from a scrum, Sammy Knighton found her half back partner Becky Hughes who made an outside break after attacking the line and had too much pace and agility for the Supermarine backline as she scored from 40 metres out. The try was converted by Becky Cox. Less than 10 minutes later Becky Hughes turned provider as her long pass found winger Deb Flemming out wide. Despite taking the pass above her head, she cut a fantastic running line without slowing down as she plucked the ball from the sky and glided through the defence. After side stepping an on coming defender she had too much speed for the full back and ran around her without being touched by a single defender. Becky Cox added the conversion to make it 0-14.
After a series of penalties conceded by Bristol 2nds, Supermarine hit back with their own score after a failed intercept attempt by Becky Hughes. Their try was converted to make it 7 -14.
It was then Jen Popham's try to make a clean break and threaten the Supermarine line before getting caught by the cover defence. Her efforts were rewarded 5 minutes before half time when Heidi Chapman-Mercer won one of many lineouts against the head and Isobel Rico caught the ball before offloading to Popham who raced down the touchline to score. The conversion was missed.
Jen Lander who also impressed during the game almost provided captain Sammy Knighton with a scoring pass which the referee deemed was forward. This was after Elena Redondo broke through the line from her own 22 before combining with Isobel Rico and Lander. Just before half time, Isabel Rico got on the scoresheet after a period of sustained pressure. Sarah Graham landed a difficult conversion from wide out on the left to make the half time score 7-26.
Bristol 2nds started the second half brightly with the wind at their backs. Captain Sammy Knighton who excelled with her leadership and decision making during the game used the conditions well with an intelligent chip into the corner and almost regathered the ball after it bounced. Then fly half Becky Hughes chipped into the opposite corner with the ball rolling into touch close to the corner flag. Bristol were gaining good terrority and kept Supermarine pinned in their 22. After pressure was applied at the lineout from Heidi Chapman-Mercer, Isobel Rico was able to gather the deflection and go over for her second try and the conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
Supermarine then started to come back into the match as Bristol's penalty count increased. They did however add a further score when centre Vicky Hayward who had a very productive afternoon despite playing out of position fed Deb Flemming in a bit of space near the half way line. Flemming rounded the winger using the full width of the pitch before standing up the fullback and beating her on the outside with a hand off. The conversation attempt failed and despite Sarah Graham being sent to the sin bin due the side refused to concede any further points. Substitutes Trish Brown, Nat Goode, Sophie Luscombe and Sarah Terry all came on and contributed to the defensive effort. The match ended Supermarine 7 - Bristol Ladies 2nds 36
Stand out players - Deb Flemming is continuing to make huge progress and the team was brilliantly led by Sammy Knighton and vice captain Heidi Chapman-Mercer. The whole pack worked tirelessly hard and looked threatening when carrying the ball and put in some thumping tackles against a much bigger pack. Players of the match were Becky Hughes for the way she controlled the game, attacked the line with pace, distribution and pressure she applied in defence. In the pack, Elena Redondo made an impact whenever she touched the ball, off loaded well and put in some strong ball carries and tackles.
